Rent a council garage or parking space

Collage of images showing various garages

Ipswich Borough Council offers garages and secure parking spaces for rent in various locations across town. You can apply to rent a garage from us.

You will be placed on a waiting list if there is no available garage at the locations you want.

When you are offered a garage, you will have to sign a Garage Agreement (please refer to garage terms, conditions and prices). This sets out your responsibilities on using the garage. If you break any part of this agreement, we will end your agreement and take back the garage. You will also be charged for forced entry, clearance and a lock change.

We will not rent a garage to tenants or leaseholders who owe us rent or service charges.

Eligibility

  • Open to all residents.
  • Applicants must not have any current or former arrears related to residential premises or garages at the time of application.

Charges

Rent is typically £12.57 per week for a garage and VAT at 20% is charged on top of the weekly rent for non-Ipswich Borough Council tenants. Hardstands are typically charged at £2.68 per week. We only accept Direct Debit for new garage tenants to pay their rent. Payments can be made weekly, fortnightly, every four weeks or monthly but must be paid in advance. The account must remain in credit or at nil balance at all times. If you are a blue badge holder you will receive £1 per week discount off the cost of renting a council garage and we will need to see evidence before applying the discount.

How to apply

If you're interested in renting a garage, you can apply online using the button below. We will contact you when a garage in one of your three nominated areas becomes available. Note that there may be a waiting list for some locations.

Ending a Garage Tenancy

If you wish to end your garage licence, you need to give us one-week written notice and agreements end on a Sunday using the following form:

Your garage must be clean and clear of all items prior to returning your keys to the Council. If this is not done, then additional charges will be applied.

Returning the keys

Keys should be returned to the letter box outside Grafton House. If you are sending by post we recommend using an appropriate tracked or recorded delivery service, as the keys remain your responsibility until they are received by the Council.

Please make sure keys are returned either in an envelope or with a label clearly stating your name and address of the garage. If we are unable to identify which garage the keys are for, this will cause delays with ending your agreement and you may be charged.
