Sheltered housing schemes

Sheltered Housing Schemes are specially designed housing communities for older people or those with support needs. These schemes offer safe, secure, and comfortable living environments, while still allowing residents to live independently.

Ipswich has 15 sheltered housing schemes, each with its own unique identity, providing a supportive community where residents can enjoy their privacy but have help available if needed.

Scheme Managers

Each scheme has a dedicated manager who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the scheme. This includes:

  • Maintaining the buildings;
  • Providing advice and support to the tenants on the services available - both from the council and from other partners;
  • Responding to emergencies;
  • Making daily contact with residents (this is optional for the residents).

The scheme managers are not permitted to:

  • Provide nursing or day-to-day personal care;
  • Give drugs or medicines;
  • Collect shopping, pensions, prescriptions or pay rents;
  • Be responsible for tenants' valuables.

Cleaning and caretaking services

Each scheme has an appointed cleaner or cleaning contractor who maintains the communal areas and a caretaking team that carries out routine maintenance, decorating and specialised cleaning of the communal areas.

Emergency support

Help is available for residents 24 hours a day in emergency situations. The scheme manager can be contacted during the day, and an emergency alarm service, linked to Ipswich HEARS, is available out of hours.
