Local charity Cancer Support Suffolk has been presented with a £11,600 donation thanks to a national recycling scheme supported by Ipswich Borough Council.
With prior agreement by the family of loved ones, metal in cremation ashes is collected and recycled, with all money generated from recycling then given to a local charity. The chosen charity is linked to bereavement in some way, operates locally, and is a cause suggested by families.
The Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) has run this Metal Recycling Scheme for many years. Since it was established, staff at scheme member crematoria have raised over £19 million for charities across the UK.
Councillor Lucy Trenchard, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Parks and Climate Change, says:
“Cancer Support Suffolk is such a worthy charity doing some amazing work and I know its incredible team has helped so many people in Ipswich and beyond.
“£11,600 is a considerable amount for a very deserving local cause. It’s wonderful to be able to give something back to Cancer Support Suffolk that will help them to carry on improving the lives of those living with the condition in the county, and their loved ones and friends.
“As my Council portfolio covers responsibility for parks and cemeteries, special thanks go to the bereaved families that give their consent to support this scheme, allowing local charities to benefit from their loss. Just like being an organ donor, this really is about giving back to others in need as a legacy.”
Mark Murphy MBE, CEO of Cancer Support Suffolk, says:
“We are so grateful to have been nominated for this amazing donation. It will make an incredible difference to the number of people with cancer and their families that we can support.
“We’re all touched in some way by cancer, either personally or through a loved one’s diagnosis. Cancer Support Suffolk has been helping local people for over 25 years and we’re planning on supporting even more people during and after their cancer journey. That’s why the whole team is appreciative of such a very generous sum, which will go a long way towards our services for individuals and communities.”
