Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive is set to meet on Tuesday 5 August to discuss procuring a specialist development partner to work with on the future of the Western Gateway to the Waterfront.
The Western Gateway is made up of the St Peters Dock car park, Pauls Silo and Burtons building. The area is part of the town’s rich heritage, lying in an Area of Archaeological Importance, on the Anglo-Saxon and medieval waterfront of Ipswich. Any development will be respectful to the area’s heritage and architectural significance, particularly Wolsey’s Gate, 4 College Street and the Church of St Peter.
It is expected that plans to develop the site would create much-needed housing and a welcoming new entrance to the waterfront, bringing in new residents, establishing new businesses and jobs and providing a significant boost to the local economy, day and night.
Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “The Western Gateway to the Waterfront offers a unique opportunity for growth and investment in this part of Ipswich. We want to see the Gateway brought back to life in sympathy with the surrounding heritage. The development will attract significant social, environmental, cultural and economic benefits to Ipswich for those who live, work and visit.”
