New Buses for Ipswich

Four double deck buses

Ipswich Buses is excited to announce that four brand-new double-deck buses will soon be joining the fleet, ready to serve Route 5 between Ipswich Central and the Hospital.

This marks the first purchase of new vehicles by Ipswich Buses in almost a decade, and the first new double-deckers since 2009. Their arrival marks a significant step forward in modernising the fleet, enhancing reliability, and making journeys more comfortable for passengers.

The investment comes at the same time as a series of service enhancements introduced across the network on 31 August. These included more frequent buses on several key routes, such as Route 5 - which now runs every 12 minutes Monday to Friday instead of every 15 minutes - along with extra journeys and improved connections across the town. These changes are designed to give customers a more convenient and dependable service, particularly at busy times of day.

Dan Bassett, Managing Director of Ipswich Buses, said:

“We are thrilled to be welcoming these new buses to Ipswich. Route 5 is one of our busiest services and provides a vital link to the Hospital. These buses will provide more space, greater comfort, and a more reliable journey for our customers. Combined with the recent timetable improvements introduced across the town, this investment shows our commitment to making bus travel the best way to get around Ipswich.”

Ipswich Buses is wholly owned by Ipswich Borough Council. Councillor Phil Smart, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, said:

“This significant investment in four more double-deckers for the fleet is great news for Ipswich. It reflects our ongoing commitment to improving public transport, reducing emissions, and providing residents and visitors with a great value, efficient, and comfortable travel experience. These modern vehicles will help ensure that bus travel remains a reliable and attractive option for everyone.”

The four new buses will begin entering service in the coming weeks, supporting the enhanced timetable and helping to meet the growing demand for public transport in Ipswich.

Ipswich Buses remains dedicated to investing in a modern, sustainable fleet and to delivering services that connect people to work, education, healthcare, shopping, and leisure across the town.
