Ipswich Borough Council’s Waste and Cleansing team has won the Outstanding Service Award 2025 by Keep Britain Tidy for its innovative Ipswich Town Football Club gateway project.

The Council installed 21 vibrantly wrapped, football and recycling themed bins in readiness for Ipswich Town’s return to the Premier League in August with the aim of increasing recycling on the go around Portman Road.

Based on Ipswich Town’s blue and white scarf, the new bins which were upcycled aim to promote a sense of pride in Ipswich with the wording ‘A Proud Premier League Town - think smart, think blue, recycle’.

Ipswich was up against the City of London Corporation and the London Borough of Redbridge and were announced as winners at the awards ceremony in Liverpool last week (Thursday 30 January).

Councillor Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, says:

“Our Waste and Cleansing teams with support from our Parks team, worked hard to get the new bins installed for the start of the new season, so we’re pleased that this hard work has paid off. This award reflects our commitment to creating sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and our community. By collaborating with the Football Club, we’ve not only celebrated our Premier League pride but also inspired residents and visitors to play their part in keeping Ipswich clean.”

A Club spokesperson says:

“The Club is delighted to learn of the Council’s Outstanding Service Award from Keep Britain Tidy.

“This collaborative project has encouraged the wider community to take pride in our town. Sustainability is an important goal for the Club, and projects like this help make a real difference. We’re delighted to see the efforts of Ipswich Borough Council recognised with this well-deserved award.”
