Colchester + Ipswich Museums will be bringing out Ipswich’s amazing array of modern artworks by leading international artists for a forthcoming exhibition.

The Colour Shape Pattern exhibition opens at Christchurch Mansion’s Wolsey Art Gallery on Saturday 24 May 2025.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore prints from world-renowned artists David Hockney and René Magritte on loan from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

Alongside these will be highlights of Ipswich’s own collection of modern and contemporary art by leading artists including Josef Albers, Sonia Delaunay, Bridget Riley, Margaret Mellis, Barbara Hepworth, Graham Crowley and Dale Devereux Barker.

A brand-new vibrant artwork created especially for the exhibition by leading Suffolk artist Lily Hammond will also go on display.

As a family-friendly and fun celebration of colour, shape and pattern in art, from bold splashes to delicate design, the exhibition will explore how everyone can discover and use these inspirations and images to get creative.

Councillor Carole Jones, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Planning and Museums, says:

“Our previous exhibition ‘An Eye For Life’ proved incredibly popular with visitors to the Wolsey Art Gallery and this promises to be just as impressive, exciting and thought-provoking. Come along to see and be inspired by Colour Shape Pattern before exploring Christchurch Mansion to find more of its colourful ceramics, patterned wallpapers and fascinating furniture. Then add your own designs and artwork to our gallery.”

Colour Shape Pattern, sponsored by Kerseys Solicitors LLP, is on display at Christchurch Mansion's Wolsey Art Gallery from 24 May 2025 until 22 February 2026. Booking is not required and entry tickets will be available to purchase either on arrival or in advance.

Opening times until October 2025 are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 10am until 5pm, and on Sunday between 11am and 5pm.
