Construction work to transform Arras Square is progressing, with major improvements taking shape as part of a project to create a more welcoming, accessible and pedestrian-friendly public space in Ipswich.
Work started on 22 June 2026 following the appointment of local contractor Brooks & Wood Ltd. The project remains on schedule and is expected to be completed by Christmas 2026.
The scheme is being delivered across four overlapping phases to ensure pedestrian access through the square can be maintained throughout the construction period. Significant progress has already been made during phase one, including site clearance, excavation works and the installation of drainage and lighting ducting. Work is also progressing on the formation of a new amphitheatre and disabled access ramp.
Once finished, the enhanced public space will feature new paving, improved accessibility through the installation of a new ramp, additional bins, new CCTV and lighting, new seating and trees.
The project will also introduce demountable bollards in St. Stephen's Lane to support pedestrianisation and a new information board featuring a French post box, celebrating Ipswich's historic links with its twin town of Arras in France.
Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council said: “It is fantastic to see work progressing so well in Arras Square. These improvements will significantly enhance the area, creating a safer, more accessible and attractive public space for residents, businesses and visitors.
“As well as improving the look and feel of the Square, the project celebrates Ipswich's unique heritage and longstanding connection with Arras. We look forward to seeing the transformation completed later this year.”
Local businesses and members of the Arras Society have been consulted on the plans and will continue to receive updates throughout the construction period. Advance information will be shared before each phase through letter drops, including details of site layouts and any traffic management arrangements. Brooks & Wood Ltd will continue to work closely with businesses to minimise disruption and ensure access for deliveries is maintained wherever possible.
