Older people in Ipswich and Suffolk are being encouraged to take part in free exercise classes designed to improve balance, fitness and flexibility, helping them stay active, independent and confident for longer.
Delivered by Ipswich Borough Council, East Suffolk Council and Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, the 12-week strength and balance programme supports residents aged 65 and over who have experienced a recent fall or who feel unsteady on their feet.
The classes are a series of gentle exercises that aim to improve strength and balance without harmful joint impact led by qualified instructors in a safe and supportive environment. The programme aims to improve balance, co-ordination, flexibility and confidence, while reducing the risk of future falls.
Sessions take place weekly over a 12-week period, with each class lasting approximately 60 minutes. The exercises are designed to help participants move more confidently, improve everyday activities such as getting in and out of a chair, and provide an opportunity to socialise with others in the community who share a goal of becoming more active.
Cllr Stefan Long, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sport said: "Falls can have a significant impact on a person's independence, confidence and overall wellbeing, which is why programmes like these are so important. The strength and balance classes provide a supportive environment where older residents can improve their fitness, flexibility and stability while gaining confidence in their everyday movements.
“It’s a great opportunity for anyone who has experienced a fall, or who feels unsteady on their feet to take advantage of a free programme and perhaps meet new people at the same time.”
The programme is open to those over 65 years old who are at risk of falls, or who have recently had a fall, and who are registered with a GP within the East Suffolk, Mid Suffolk and Babergh or Ipswich Borough Council districts.
