Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive will consider a series of proposals designed to support continued investment in parking services while proposing an extension of a popular parking offer.
The proposals include updates to parking tariffs across both off-street public car parks and on-street paid parking places (operated on behalf of Suffolk County Council). Subject to approval, the changes would come into effect from 20 July 2026.
The recommended updates reflect the rising costs of maintaining, improving, and operating parking facilities across the town, ensuring they remain safe, accessible, and fit for purpose for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Alongside the tariff proposals, Executive will also consider designating authority to extend the popular £2.70 after 2pm weekend parking offer at the Council’s Crown Car Park, subject to a successful trial period. If approved, this rate may be adjusted to £2.80 in line with the recommendations.
If approved, the extended offer would build on the scheme’s success in attracting visitors later in the day, supporting local businesses and encouraging more people to enjoy Ipswich’s growing evening and weekend economy. By making it easier and more affordable to park later in the day, the Council aims to enhance the town centre’s appeal as a destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Councillor Jane Riley, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Customers, said: “We understand that any increase in parking charges should be carefully considered. These proposals reflect rising costs in delivering parking services, while still maintaining affordable options.
“We’re committed to supporting Ipswich’s town centre, which is why we’re proposing, subject to a successful trial of the popular ‘after 2pm offer’ at Crown Car Park at weekends, to designate authority to make this a permanent arrangement.
“This builds on the Council’s ambition to boost Ipswich’s afternoon and night-time economy, encouraging more people to enjoy evenings out. It reflects the priorities set out in Ipswich Borough Council’s Corporate Strategy: Ensuring the town centre is vibrant, inclusive, and a great place to live, work, and visit.”
