The Secretary of State has announced she is withdrawing the decision announced in March about Local Government Reorganisation in Suffolk and that a review of plans to streamline local government is set to take place to ensure the process is robust and aligns with the new government’s plans to rewire the state.
Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council said:
“We note today's announcement that the Government is reviewing proposals for Local Government Reorganisation following new legal advice and that the previous decisions affecting Suffolk will be withdrawn pending that review. We welcome the Government's confirmation that local elections in May 2027 will proceed on existing council boundaries while this work is undertaken.
“We will continue to engage constructively with Government, our neighbouring authorities, and partners across the county as the review progresses. Our priority remains ensuring that any future changes to local government structures deliver better outcomes for residents, stronger local accountability, sustainable public services, and a real voice for communities.
“In the meantime, residents can be assured that Ipswich Borough Council will continue to focus on the issues that matter most to them, including housing, economic growth, environmental services, community safety, and supporting the town's continued regeneration.”
While this announcement may create a period of uncertainty for Local Government Reorganisation, Ipswich Borough Council remains focused on delivering high-quality services for our residents, supporting local communities, and driving forward the investment and regeneration projects that are helping to secure Ipswich's future.
