As the world marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, people across the United Kingdom, and here in Ipswich, join millions around the globe in remembering the 2,977 lives lost in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania.
Today, Ipswich Borough Council will fly the stars and stripes and light its town hall up in the American red, white and blue.
The events of 9/11 had a profound impact far beyond the United States, not least because some of the victims were British citizens – including two brothers from Ipswich who had worked in the World Trade Centre and died that day.
Many will recall watching the events unfold on the world’s media that day, and where they were when it happened. Families and communities across the globe were directly affected by the tragedy.
Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “Today, we honour the memory of all those who lost their lives and pay tribute to the courage of the emergency responders.
“The 25th anniversary serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, and the shared values of peace, freedom and mutual respect that connect communities on both sides of the Atlantic.”
