A major scheme to transform and enhance one of Ipswich town centre's main streets has moved a step closer.
The initial green light for highways work from the county council was approved in July this year meaning Ipswich Borough Council’s construction work on Lloyds Avenue is now scheduled to begin in the latter part of this year, 2026. This is subject to receipt of the formal agreement to work on the highway from Suffolk County Council.
Planning permission for the scheme was secured in April 2025, and local contractor Brooks and Wood Ltd. is appointed to deliver the works.
The project will create a more attractive, accessible and welcoming public space, strengthening the important north-south route between the Cornhill and Crown Street. The scheme includes expanded pedestrian areas, improved seating opportunities and high-quality paving across both footways and carriageways to create an environment that prioritises pedestrians, similar to the successful improvements delivered in St Peter's Street.
Improvements will also extend to Tower Ramparts, strengthening links with the Plaza area, while new cycle parking facilities, the decluttering of Lloyds Archway and new planters will help create a greener and more inviting town centre environment.
The project focuses on long-term accessibility for pedestrians, and a taxi rank will be retained at the top of Lloyds Avenue, keeping access for taxi customers, while creating additional space along Lloyds Avenue for public use and enjoyment.
Subject to receipt of the formal agreement with Suffolk County Council’s highways service, the scheme is expected to be completed by mid-July 2027.

The scheme forms part of the Council's ongoing programme of investment in Ipswich town centre, aimed at creating safer, greener and more attractive spaces that support economic growth while enhancing the experience of those who live, work and visit the town.
