Hawke Road play area

A brand-new ‘gasworks’ themed play area on Hawke Road has officially opened today (Friday 26 June), providing an inclusive and imaginative space for children and families to enjoy.

The play area, located within the newly developed housing site on the former Diesco industrial land, has been designed to reflect the area’s heritage while creating a modern, welcoming space for the community.

Featuring climbing mountains, slides and a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, the play area has been carefully designed to encourage imaginative play and ensure accessibility for all children.

The development also includes new landscaping and green space, helping to support biodiversity and create an attractive environment for residents and visitors.

Councillor Stefan Long, Ipswich Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sport, said: “I’m delighted to see this fantastic new play area now open on Hawke Road. It’s a great addition to the new homes development and provides a safe, inclusive and enjoyable space for children and families.

“The ‘gasworks’ theme is a brilliant way to celebrate the site’s industrial heritage while creating somewhere that encourages creativity, play and outdoor activity.

“Schemes like this are about more than just building homes – they’re about creating thriving communities, and this play area will play an important role in that.”

The play area forms part of the wider Hawke Road development delivered by Handford Homes, Ipswich Borough Council’s housing company, in partnership with Gipping Construction Ltd and Ipswich-based architects Barefoot & Giles.
