A dedicated new Neighbourhood Cleansing Team is already improving streets and public spaces across Ipswich, following Ipswich Borough Council's commitment to provide additional cleansing work across the borough over the next two years.
The initiative is designed to support routine services, tackle untidy environmental hotspots around town, and help keep the streets of Ipswich cleaner, safer and more welcoming for residents, businesses and visitors.
Since beginning operations in August, the Neighbourhood Cleansing Team has completed intensive cleansing work in a number of locations, prioritised because they experience issues such as weed growth, litter and debris, or need additional attention due to high footfall, local concerns or their importance as key routes and public spaces. So far, work has taken place in:
South West Ipswich
Ashley Street, Austin Street, Bradley Street, Hartley Street, Kenyon Street, Pauline Street, Purplett Street, Ranelagh Road, Shelley Street, Turin Street, Tyler Street and Vaughan Street.
Central Ipswich
Cornhill, Crown Street, Handford Road, Sir Alf Ramsey Way, Upper Brook Street, Bramford Road and Norwich Road.
North West Ipswich
Sproughton Road.
South East Ipswich
Nacton Road.
The Neighbourhood Cleansing Team will continue working across the borough on a planned programme, focusing on areas affected by weed growth, litter and debris, as well as locations that need additional attention beyond routine cleansing. Priority areas include the town centre, residential neighbourhoods, busy pedestrian routes, key gateways into Ipswich and local shopping areas.
Councillor Stefan Long, Ipswich Borough Council portfolio holder for environment and sport, said:
“Over the last month the team has made a strong start across Ipswich, targeting areas that need extra attention and helping create cleaner, safer and more welcoming places for everyone.
“Residents regularly tell us they want clean, tidy streets and public spaces, and we have listened. Our new team is helping us deliver on that priority, and their work is already making a visible difference for residents, businesses and visitors.
“We want people to feel proud of where they live, work and visit. While the council will continue investing in and delivering improvements, we all have a role to play. By disposing of litter responsibly, picking up dog waste and taking pride in our local environment, together we can help keep Ipswich looking its best.”
The Neighbourhood Cleansing Team will continue its borough-wide programme over the coming weeks and months, delivering targeted improvements and supporting the council's wider work to keep Ipswich clean and attractive.
