Ipswich Borough Council's Executive will consider proposals to continue funding a number of subsidised bus services that help keep communities connected across the town.
At its meeting next week, Executive will be asked to approve the continuation of financial support for a range of evening, Sunday and Bank Holiday bus services.
These services are currently supported by the Council because they are not commercially viable but nevertheless provide important links for residents travelling to work, education, healthcare appointments, shops, leisure facilities and community venues.
The report to be considered by Executive highlights that the services are generally performing well, with passenger numbers remaining strong and subsidy levels representing good value for money.
It is proposed to keep all current subsidised services running, with most held at today’s cost for the next three years and funded without any impact on Council Tax.
If approved, the subsidies would continue from January 2027 until January 2030, helping to maintain vital transport connections for many residents.
Councillor Jane Riley, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Customers, said:
"These bus services provide an important lifeline for many people across Ipswich, particularly during evenings, Sundays and Bank Holidays when alternative transport options can be limited.
"They provide vital links to help residents access employment, healthcare, education, shopping and leisure opportunities, while also supporting sustainable travel and reducing reliance on the car.
"The proposals recognise the important role these routes play in helping people stay connected, and reducing social isolation, particularly for residents who do not have access to a car or who rely on public transport to remain independent.
“Having carefully considered the performance of the current subsidised services, I am pleased that the majority continue to demonstrate strong passenger usage and represent good value for money. The continuation of these services in Ipswich will help ensure public transport remains available where it is most needed.”
These proposals support the Council's Corporate Strategy commitment to maintain Ipswich's bus network where subsidy is necessary, helping residents access essential services whilst encouraging more sustainable forms of transport.
Executive will consider the recommendations at its meeting on Tuesday 11 August.
