New green spaces across Ipswich town centre are already proving popular with residents, visitors and businesses, as work nears completion at four key locations.
Brooks and Wood Ltd., a local contractor appointed by Ipswich Borough Council, commenced the four-phase project in early February 2026. The majority of the works have now been completed in Princes Street, Queen Street, St. Nicholas Street and Wolsey Square, creating attractive new green spaces that enhance the route between the town centre and waterfront, while supporting biodiversity and improving the public realm.
The project has introduced new trees, planting and seating, tailored to each location which will help to support pollinators and wildlife, whist improving the appearance of the town centre.
The improvements have already received a positive response from residents and visitors with comments including “It's so lovely to have somewhere nice to sit in the centre of town” and “These are marvellous additions to the town centre. They look absolutely great”.
Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “It is fantastic to see these improvements being enjoyed by so many people. The project has created a more attractive, welcoming and environmentally friendly place to be.
“These new green spaces provide opportunities for people to rest, meet friends, spend more time in the town centre and connect with nature, while also supporting biodiversity and helping to create a greener Ipswich for future generations.”
This project has been funded through the Government's Local Regeneration Fund and forms part of wider investment to improve Ipswich town centre and create a greener, healthier and more attractive place to live, work and visit.
The new planting has been carefully selected to help it thrive in an urban environment and provide year-round environmental benefits. The new trees and planting will be cared for by the landscaping contractor for the first two years, including watering and maintenance. After that, Ipswich Borough Council will take over their ongoing care. The trees have also been planted with an irrigation system and permeable surfaces to help ensure they receive enough water to grow and thrive.
The remaining seating at Wolsey Square, which is the final part of the project, is scheduled to be installed over the next couple of months, following the completion of works on the neighbouring building.
