Children and families in Ipswich will soon be enjoying a brand-new inclusive play area and outdoor fitness space at Alderman Road Recreation Ground, as works begin this week.
The scheme has been designed to provide a welcoming, accessible and engaging space where children aged between one and 14 can play, learn and be active together.
The play area will include 95 play features including wheelchair-accessible play equipment, sensory and musical installations, communication and sign language panels, inclusive swings, and accessible seesaws, as well as a climbing net, spinning equipment, a cableway and hammocks. Quiet spaces and accessible seating areas are also incorporated into the design, to allow children to enjoy both active play and calmer activities.
The design celebrates local identity, with bespoke play features inspired by Suffolk and Ipswich Town Football Club, including a Suffolk Punch horse springer, a "Tractor Boys and Girls" multi-play unit, and a custom "Bluey" mascot play structure.
This play area extends beyond children's play, with a dedicated outdoor fitness area featuring exercise equipment connected to the existing park pathways. This will provide opportunities for older children, teenagers and adults to enjoy free outdoor exercise in a safe and attractive environment.
This project is one of a number of improvements being delivered through Ipswich Borough Council's £3.5 million Play Area Strategy, which is investing in modern, high-quality play facilities across the town.
Councillor Stefan Long, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sport said: "I’m pleased that work is beginning on what will be a fantastic play area at Alderman Road Recreation Ground. The design has been carefully developed to ensure children of all abilities can play together, while creating a fantastic community space for families to enjoy for years to come.
"The combination of inclusive play equipment, sensory features, outdoor fitness facilities and local-themed play experiences will make this one of the most exciting play destinations in Ipswich."
The current play area will remain open whilst works are carried out. The work is due to be complete by March 2027, weather permitting.
