DiGBY, the litter picking octopus, is looking for residents to organise their own community litter picks as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean.
We want local groups, friends, families and neighbours to help for an hour or two and pick up litter in the area of Ipswich where they live.
The big clean-up is happening between Friday 28 May – Sunday 13 June 2021. Ipswich Borough Council can supply litter-picking kits (subject to availability) and pick up bags of litter collected by volunteers who sign up. Volunteers are also asked to pledge time – no matter how big or small – to participate in the campaign. The amount of time pledged will be converted to miles and counted towards Keep Britain Tidy’s target to reach one million miles. You can make your pledge at www.keepbritaintidy.org.
Councillor Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council’s environment portfolio holder, said: “The outdoors has proved more important than ever before this past year, and that’s why we want residents to come together to help keep our communities clean, green and litter-free. By getting a group of friends together you can have fun while helping improve your community. Whether it’s the street where you live or the park that helped you through lockdown, show some love to Ipswich’s outdoor spaces and pledge to pick!”

DiGBY, the blue octopus, became famous after appearing as a mural on the side of a silo on Ipswich Waterfront. His tentacles represent the fact that it takes a lot of helping hands to tackle litter, including the many volunteers who work with us throughout the year.
