Portal - Digital Ipswich

The World is Watching from Ipswich!

Say hello to the UK’s first Portal, right here on the Cornhill. This one of a kind sculpture connects Ipswich to cities including Dublin, Philadelphia and Vilnius live, in real time!

Step up, wave hello, and be part of history.

Why the Portal is Great for Ipswich

  • Boosts Footfall & Visitor Numbers
The Portal is designed to attract attention and engagement, encouraging more people to visit the town centre, stay longer, and explore what Ipswich has to offer.
  • Puts Ipswich on the Global Map
As the first UK town to host a Portal, Ipswich joins a network of forward-thinking cities. This installation showcases our town’s ambition and creativity to a global audience.
  • Celebrates Culture & Connectivity
Created by Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, the Portal is part of the Digital Ipswich programme, funded by the Towns Fund. It reflects our commitment to cultural exchange, digital innovation, and community engagement.
  • Supports Local Businesses
Increased footfall means more opportunities for local shops, cafés, and venues to thrive. The Portal is expected to drive economic activity and create a buzz around the Cornhill.
  • Inspires Curiosity & Conversation
Whether you're a resident or a visitor, the Portal invites you to pause, connect, and reflect. It’s a modern landmark that sparks dialogue and brings people together.

Operating times

The Portal switches on its window to the world at 6am daily and turns off at 11pm each night.

Outside these times it will show a blank screen so please do not worry that its broken!

Its feed rotates between all the other locations, with more arriving all the time, so spending some time viewing the changing images will take you around the world.

We’re sure everyone will behave perfectly, but there is CCTV covering the Portal to make sure that we’re always showing the best of Ipswich to the rest of the world.

If you notice any issue with the Portal, whether that is a technical fault, inappropriate content showing from other places, or there is an issue with cleanliness, please contact Ipswich Borough Council you can find the reporting form here:  www.ipswich.gov.uk/leisure/portal-art-installation
