Overview
Every ten years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries out a census to gather detailed information about the people living in England and Wales and the composition of local neighbourhoods. The most recent census took place on Sunday 27th March 2011, when ONS sent out questionnaires to approximately 25 million households.
Census details
The census collected information on various aspects such as work, health, national identity, citizenship, ethnic background, education, second homes, language, religion, and marital status. These statistics help build a comprehensive picture of today's society.
Importance for local authorities
Like all local authorities in England and Wales, Ipswich Borough Council relies on census population statistics to secure government funding for public services. The amount of funding received is directly related to the census data, reflecting the number and characteristics of people living in our area. Even a small discrepancy in census data could significantly impact public services and community resources. It is essential for the census to include everyone, everywhere.
