The current Mayor of Ipswich

Councillor Stefan Long

Introduction

Councillor Stefan Long was born and raised in Ipswich, attending Copleston High School.

He has worked at the Port of Felixstowe for nearly 20 years, starting as an apprentice engineer at the age of 16. This career has taken him as far afield as Shanghai, spending three months living and working there for the build of new quayside cranes.

Councillor Long was elected as a Borough Councillor in 2022, representing the Rushmere ward.

At the age of 36, he is one of the youngest mayors in Ipswich's history since the role was created in 1836.

Mayoral Theme and Charities

The chosen charities for his Mayoral year are:

  • Dora Brown, a charity which helps restore homes to a decent standard after they have fallen into disrepair, for a multitude of reasons.
  • East Anglian Children’s Hospices (EACH) which delivers care and support to young children and their families.

Councillor Long says:

“Over this next year I look forward to representing and celebrating Ipswich as Mayor, and raising as much money as possible for these two great charities.

“The history of Ipswich has is something to be celebrated and to be proud of and, with that in mind, the themes of my mayoral year will be history, heritage, kindness and compassion.”

Reflection on Ipswich

“I believe history forms our future and we should all be proud of our roots. As for kindness and compassion, I see examples of this every day in our town in some way, shape or form and I know I will see much more of it in this coming year.

“I am truly grateful to have this opportunity to serve my home town as its Mayor and, through the year, I hope to meet many of the amazing people who do so much for Ipswich and its vibrant communities.”
