Private Hire Vehicles

You are here

Private hire vehicles (mini-cabs) must be pre-booked through a licensed private hire operator. Some of the larger operators have offices where the public can pre-book their journey in person or by telephone.

Vehicles may display stickers supplied by the licensed operator bearing the operator's logo and telephone number. These can be displayed on the front and/or rear windows and/or side door panels of the vehicle.

Private hire vehicles must not have roof signs.

Private hire fares are set by each private hire operator and not the Council. Vehicles may have a taximeter to show the fare being charged, but this is not compulsory.

It is illegal for private hire vehicles to stand on taxi ranks or to be hailed or directly booked with the driver in the street, and to do so may invalidate insurance cover.

View the Public Registers to find a list of licenced service operators.
