Resident discounts

The Council Tax bill assumes there are at least two adults living in the property. If there is only one adult occupying the property as their main home, you are entitled to a 25% reduction. You can request or cancel a Single Occupier Discount online by clicking the buttons below.

Note: Please note that all buttons on this page will open in a new window, so you can keep this page open while accessing the forms in separate tabs.

Who Counts for Council Tax?

All adults count towards the Council Tax unless they fall into one of the following categories:

  • 18 or 19 years old and either at school or have just left school;
  • Full-time students or student nurses;
  • Youth training trainees under 25 on a government-recognised youth training programme;
  • Apprentices whose training leads to an accredited qualification, with a salary no greater than £195 per week (gross) and less than what they would earn once qualified;
  • Someone who is severely mentally impaired;
  • A patient living permanently in hospital;
  • Someone permanently being looked after in a care home;
  • Care workers working for low pay (usually for a charity);
  • Someone caring for a person with a disability who is not their spouse, partner, or a child under 18;
  • Members of a visiting force or certain international institutions;
  • Someone staying in certain hostels or night shelters;
  • Someone in prison, but not those imprisoned for not paying Council Tax or a fine;
  • Members of certain religious communities (e.g., monks and nuns);
  • Foreign diplomats.

Should you get a discount?

To find out, add up all the adults who live in your home, including yourself, then take off those who do not count for the Tax. If this leaves one person who counts for the Tax, you should get a 25% discount. If no-one counts for the Tax, you should get a 50% discount.
