Developing skills is key in today’s fast-paced world, as technology, automation and AI are transforming jobs, changing how we do things and creating new jobs, which may require different skills than before.
So having strong, up-to-date skills helps you stay current, helps you adapt to change and helps you reach your full potential.
And… employers value skills as much as (or more than) degrees, focusing on what you can do - and not just qualifications.
Apprenticeships help you develop these practical skills like communication, problem solving, teamwork...which are transferable into so many roles and careers.
Key skills that our Apprentices are developing
I am currently studying a Level 3 Certificate in Housing, since starting my apprenticeship I have learnt how to manage my time more effectively, use clearer communication and develop my problem-solving skills.
Through both my studies and my practical experience, I have developed several key skills, including effective communication, organisational and administrative skills and problem-solving skills all of which will support me in my future career.
The top skills I’ve learned are: Communication, I get to talk to a wide range of people including councillors, applicants and colleagues, and Time management, there’s always a lot going on, so I must make sure I prioritise correctly,
I am not the most confident communicator but since starting my apprenticeship as a Community Sport and Health Officer I have improved my people skills enormously.
I have really enjoyed talking with all the people that attend classes, or phone in for advice, receiving praise from regulars who attend classes has improved my overall confidence and self-belief no end.
I am currently completing a level 2 apprenticeship in Garden Horticulture developing lots of specific knowledge, but I have also really improved my social skills through interacting with the public and am feeling much more confident interacting with different people.
I am completing my Electrician apprenticeship, learning so much technically but also additional skills separate from the trade itself, such as time management and important people skills from working with both customers and colleagues.
I have now completed my Business Support Apprenticeship – which was a complete career change for me and has enabled me to develop important skills such as time management, communication and project delivery.
