Plans of improved access parking area

A planning application has been submitted for improvements to Hawthorn Drive Shopping Parade.

The proposed scheme, being led by Ipswich Borough Council, will create an enhanced public realm and will improve accessibility to the shopping parade at Hawthorn Drive, an essential amenity to local residents.

The existing car park will be extended, and new paving will be laid to create easier access to the various shops; some of which currently have steps or individual access ramps. This work will create a refreshed square in front of the shops which will be furnished with high quality timber seating. New three-to-four-meter trees will also be planted in newly created tree pits to enable them to flourish long-term.

With funding provided from the Government Local Regeneration Fund, formerly known as the Towns Fund, the Hawthorn Drive improvement project will rejuvenate the space through thoughtful public realm improvements.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, says: “This work will ensure local residents, who rely on this shopping parade, benefit from improved accessibility, more parking and a greener, more attractive area to visit.

“The simple, attractive design delivers a better environment and is built to last.”

Jack Abbott, MP, says: “I'm really pleased we are using government investment to improve everyday spaces in our communities, and these plans for Hawthorn Drive Shopping Parade will make a positive difference for the people who rely on it.

“The improvements will create a more accessible and welcoming space, with better paving, additional parking and new trees and seating that will brighten the area for shoppers and local businesses alike."
