Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive is set to consider a proposal to review and update hackney carriage (taxi) fares across the borough.
The proposed changes aim to ensure that local taxi services remain viable and continue to serve the community effectively, with fares that continue to be fair and sustainable for both drivers and passengers. The review is being carried out to comply with statutory requirements and to provide an uplift in hackney carriage fare levels, reflecting changes in operating costs and supporting the local taxi trade.
If the proposal is approved by the Executive at its meeting on Tuesday 30 September, public consultation on the new ‘Table of Fares’ will be held before any changes are introduced. The earliest date for the new fares to come into effect is 5 November 2025.
Representatives of the taxi trade, residents and other stakeholders would be encouraged to take part in the consultation process, which includes:
- Advertising the proposed fare changes to invite public feedback.
- Reviewing any objections during the statutory consultation period to determine whether the proposal needs to be revised or if the increase can be implemented as planned.
- Implementing the new fares on or after 5 November 2025, provided no objections are received (or any received are withdrawn).
Councillor John Cook, Ipswich Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities and Sport, said:
“We’re proposing a fair and necessary uplift to hackney carriage fares to reflect current economic pressures and ensure the sustainability of the service. This review follows the statutory process and, subject to consultation, aims to introduce the new fare structure from November.”
