At its next meeting on Tuesday 30 September, Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive will consider proposals to develop a new multi-storey car park at Portman Road.
The proposed development will deliver a modern, efficient parking facility with a total of 718 spaces including 32 Blue Badge spaces, dedicated bays for electric vehicles, and cycle parking. 655 spaces are within the new multi-storey car park and 63 spaces within an adjacent surface car park.
This is a key component of the wider Portman Road Masterplan, an ambitious and transformative infrastructure project for the area announced by the Council last year. It must be built and operational before other elements of the Masterplan can proceed, as it will replace long-stay parking spaces lost during future development of a state-of-the-art Aquatics Centre as a focus for sports, leisure, and community well-being, support potential future developments such as hospitality services, and allow for possible expansion of the Ipswich Town Football Club Cobbold Stand.
Executive will be asked to consider approving a capital budget for the Portman Road Multi-Storey Car Park project and give authority for a planning application to be submitted for the revised scheme. Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to begin in summer 2026 with completion anticipated by the end of 2027.
Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, says:
“This multi-storey car park is a vital first step in delivering the Portman Road Masterplan. By approving the revised design and budget, we’re enabling progress on key developments like the new Aquatics Centre, while ensuring long-stay parking is maintained for residents and visitors.”
