Ipswich Borough Council is proposing to invest £400,000 over the next two years in Neighbourhood Cleansing to improve the appearance of streets and public spaces across the borough.

The proposal would help create cleaner, safer and more welcoming streets and public spaces for residents, businesses and visitors.

Priority areas include:

  • The town centre.
  • Busy pedestrian routes and main roads.
  • Key gateways into Ipswich.
  • Residential areas with recurring cleanliness issues.
  • Local shopping areas, neighbourhood centres and public spaces.
  • Locations affected by weed growth, litter and debris.
  • Environmental hotspots needing additional attention beyond routine cleansing.

The proposal follows positive financial results for 2025/26, which has enabled the Council to consider additional investment in frontline services.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: "We're pleased that our prudent approach to finance allows us to invest £400,000 in a new Neighbourhood Cleansing Team.

"Residents tell us that keeping Ipswich clean and tidy is important to them. We have heard this and are providing additional people to improve the appearance of our streets and public spaces.

"This dedicated team will work across the borough on a planned basis, helping to tackle environmental issues and support cleaner, greener neighbourhoods for everyone."

The proposal will be considered by the Council's Executive as part of the 2025/26 financial outturn report on Tuesday 14 July.
