Overview
The River Action Group was established in 1997 when the Borough Council's Environment Panel decided that the area of the Gipping from Stoke Bridge to Sproughton needed particular environmental improvement.
Initially the Group comprised volunteer groups, Ipswich Borough Council planning officers, Greenways Project, Anglian Water and the Environment Agency. More recently members have included Sustrans, representatives from Suffolk County Council, the Inland Waterways Association and the River Gipping Trust.
The Group meets every two months throughout the year.
A great deal of day-to-day oversight and maintenance is carried out by volunteers working with the Greenways Project and the Ipswich Wildlife Group.

A River For All
The leaflet "A River for All", a brief guide to the riverside walk and cycleway, can be downloaded from the Greenways website via the link below. It is also available free of charge from the Customer Services Centre in the Town Hall.

The Ipswich River Strategy
In 1999 the River Action Group commissioned a firm of landscape architects, Gillespies, to help them prepare the 'Ipswich River Strategy', which outlined the aims of regenerating the river corridor from Ipswich Docks upstream as far as Sproughton. The Strategy was reviewed in March 2015 and can be downloaded below:

Getting involved
There are many ways to contribute. Volunteers meet regularly to help upgrade, maintain, and clean up the riverside.
