Private Hire Vehicles

Private hire vehicles (mini-cabs) must be pre-booked through a licensed private hire operator.

Vehicle identification

  • Private hire vehicles may display stickers with the operator's logo and telephone number. These stickers can be placed on the front and/or rear windows and/or side door panels of the vehicle.
  • Private hire vehicles must not have roof signs.

Fares and taximeters

Private hire fares are set by each private hire operator and not the Council. Vehicles may have a taximeter to show the fare being charged, but this is not compulsory.

It is illegal for private hire vehicles to stand on taxi ranks or to be hailed or directly booked with the driver in the street, and to do so may invalidate insurance cover.
