Hate crimes are any crimes that are targeted at a person because of hostility or prejudice towards that person’s:
- Disability
- Race or ethnicity
- Religion or belief
- Sexual orientation
- Transgender identity
Hate crime not only has a harmful effect on its victims by attacking who they are as individuals because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or transgender identity, but also on their families and communities. It includes online and verbal abuse as well as physical assaults.
How do I report?
You can report hate crime directly to police online Suffolk Police's reporting page or anonymously via True Vision.
If you would prefer to speak to someone, please dial 101, where someone will be able to help you.
Always dial 999 if there is a crime in progress or an immediate police response is necessary.
Advice for victims of Hate Crime
- Avoid confrontation. Get yourself somewhere safe before considering reporting.
- Write down what happened including the time, location, and a description of the offender(s).
- Try to retain any information or evidence of the incident e.g. text messages, social media posts, letters, etc.
- Remember, support is available even if you don’t want to report the incident.
