Keeping pets and animals

You are here

We recognise that keeping pets and animals can improve a person’s wellbeing and life enjoyment. This statement outlines our approach to the keeping of pets and animals by Ipswich Borough Council tenants.

Under the Council’s Tenancy Agreement tenants must obtain written permission before keeping any animal, bird or reptile at their property.

Ipswich Borough Council will manage requests for permissions and deal with complaints from tenants and neighbours relating to pets and animals. Tenants who already had a pet or animal before September 2015 will not need to submit a new request unless they are requesting further pets.

Following a concerning rise in attacks and fatalities caused by XL Bully dogs, the government has added this breed to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
