Historic replica of Christopher Columbus’ ship sails into Ipswich

Replica of a 15th century sailing ship at sea

Ipswich is set to welcome a remarkable piece of maritime history this week as the Nao Santa Maria, a stunning replica of Christopher Columbus’ 15th-century vessel, sails into Orwell Quay.

The ship will be docked at Ipswich Harbour from Wednesday 3 September to Sunday 7 September, offering residents and visitors a rare opportunity to step aboard a floating museum that commemorates the legendary 1492 voyage that led to Columbus discovering the Americas.

Open daily from 10am to 8pm, the Nao Santa Maria invites guests to explore its decks, learn about life at sea during the Age of Discovery, and experience a recreation of the conditions faced by Columbus and his crew. The ship features four masts, over 300 square metres of sail, and more than three kilometres of rope, all designed to replicate the original.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said:

“We are delighted to welcome the Nao Santa Maria to Ipswich for its five-day stay. This unique vessel offers a fascinating experience for all ages. It promises to be a stunning spectacle on Orwell Quay, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the history of the Santa Maria and Christopher Columbus.”

An official opening ceremony is to take place at 9.30am on Wednesday 3 September, attended by the Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Stefan Long, Councillor MacDonald and other invited guests. They will be welcomed aboard by the captain and given a guided tour before the ship opens to the public.

Built by the Nao Victoria Foundation, a Spanish non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving maritime history, the replica was constructed using an innovative blend of fibreglass and wood. Launched in 2018 after 14 months of work by nearly 100 skilled tradespeople, the ship weighs 200 tons, measures 28 metres in length and, like its 15th century namesake, has successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

Tickets are £10 for adults, £5 for children (aged 5–10) and under 5s free.  A Family ticket (2 adults + up to 3 children) is £25.

Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.naosantamaria.org/content or directly on board while the ship is docked.

Group and school visits can be arranged by emailing ecampos@fundacionnaovictoria.org

The ship’s arrival coincides with Merchant Navy Day on Wednesday 3 September. Later that morning, the Mayor will also attend the Ipswich Merchant Navy Association Parade and Seafarer’s Memorial Service, where he will deliver a speech. The Red Ensign flag is to be flown at Ipswich Town Hall throughout the day in honour of the occasion.
