An amazing array of modern artworks by leading international artists can be seen at the new Colour Shape Pattern exhibition, now open in Ipswich.
Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Stefan Long, was delighted to officially open this vibrant show at Christchurch Mansion’s Wolsey Art Gallery last weekend.
Visitors have the opportunity to explore prints from world-renowned artists David Hockney and René Magritte on loan from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
Alongside these are highlights of Ipswich’s own collection of modern and contemporary art brought together by experts from Colchester + Ipswich Museums. Artists and sculptors featured include Bridget Riley, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Josef Albers, Sonia Delaunay, Margaret Mellis, Graham Crowley and Dale Devereux Barker.
A brand-new, bird-inspired major artwork created especially for the exhibition by leading Suffolk artist and Ipswich resident Lily Hammond is also on display.
As a family-friendly and fun celebration of colour, shape and pattern in art and crafts, from bold splashes to delicate design, the exhibition encourages everyone to not only discover these images but also use them as an inspiration to get creative themselves.
Councillor Carole Jones, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Planning and Museums, says:
“Our previous exhibition ‘An Eye For Life’ proved incredibly popular with visitors to the Wolsey Art Gallery and this is just as impressive, exciting and thought-provoking. Come along to see and be inspired by Colour Shape Pattern - once you’ve taken in the exhibition, the rest of the Mansion is open for you to explore for free. Find more colourful ceramics, patterned wallpapers and fascinating furniture there, then add your own designs and artwork to our gallery.”
