Car park improvement work

Published4th May 2018

A programme of works to improve four car parks in Ipswich starts next week.

The Borough Council car parks in Fore Street and Portman Road need some resurfacing work to make them safer for customers but some closures will be necessary for the work to be done.

In addition, some lay-out changes in West End Road car park will be carried out to provide more spaces for cars. This work will be carried out on Friday 11th May and will involve a partial closure for the day.

Fore Street car park will be partially closed on Tuesday 8th May but will be fully closed from Friday 18th May to Thursday 7th June. Much of the work will be undertaken during the half-term holiday, when the car park is not as busy as there will be no school trips to the swimming pool. Alternative parking arrangements will be in place and clubs and local businesses are being informed.

The small car park in Portman Road (near the Sir Alf Ramsey statue) will be partially closed for preliminary work on Friday 8th June and then fully closed for one day only on Friday 29th June. Customers are advised to park in the other Borough car parks over the road – there are more free spaces on Friday than at other times during the week.

The Portman Road extension car park (near the junction with Princes Street) will be closed for improvements for one week between Friday 13th July and Friday 20th July but will be partially closed on Tuesday 3rd July. Again, customers will be sign-posted to the main Portman Road car parks.

A Council spokesman said: “We want to offer a better parking experience to our customers and this work will be done as quickly as possible to keep disruption to a minimum. We apologise for any inconvenience while the work is going on but we do have alternative parking close by.”
