Hundreds of new affordable homes being progressed in Ipswich

Published3rd January 2023

Council plans to build more than three hundred new homes are underway in Ipswich, in addition to 100 already completed since 2020.

Ipswich Borough Council’s house-building company, Handford Homes is developing new affordable homes for the Council across four sites: Ravenswood, Bibb Way, Fore Hamlet and Hawke Road. Some of these are set to be ready for new council tenants in 2024, some of the homes at Ravenswood will be starter homes for sale and others available at market rent.

The development at Fore Hamlet recently received planning permission, with work due to start onsite at both Ravenswood and Bibb Way in January 2023. Meanwhile a planning application has been submitted for new homes and a play area at Hawke Road.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Housing, says:

“The development of new affordable housing remains a priority for Ipswich Borough Council. I was delighted to be at the official opening of 16 flats in Grimwade Street recently, with residents very pleased with their new homes.

“Ipswich has an increasing demand for housing, and we’re pleased that over the next three years we will see a further 300 new homes being developed, so I’m looking forward to several more official openings.”

The Council’s Executive meeting to discuss this update report (Item 6) will take place on the 10 January 2023, with the full agenda and meeting papers available online.
