At this evening’s Annual Meeting (17 May), Ipswich Borough Council elected Councillor Neil MacDonald as its new Leader.

Councillor MacDonald succeeds Councillor David Ellesmere, who stood down from the role after twelve years.

Cllr Neil MacDonald, incoming Leader, says:

“It is an honour to be taking the reins as Leader of Ipswich Borough Council.

“This is a challenging and exciting time to lead this Council and in the summer we will set out a new Corporate Strategy which will focus on:

  • Achieving a thriving town centre
  • Meeting the housing needs of all communities
  • Becoming a carbon neutral council
  • Promoting community wellbeing and fairness in Ipswich Borough Council
  • Being a financially sustainable council providing good quality services

“We cannot achieve these priorities in isolation. We need to be a good partner and work with others to address the borough’s needs”.

Councillor MacDonald will be supported by Councillor Bryony Rudkin as Deputy Leader and six other Portfolio Holders each with responsibility for an area of the Council’s work.
