Ipswich Borough Council has paid most Council Tax Rebates

Published16th May 2022

Ipswich Borough Council has paid nearly all of the 35,000 households who pay their Council Tax by Direct Debit and who are also eligible for the Council Tax Rebate of £150 – i.e. households in Council Tax bands A to D.

Those households who have recently moved to direct debit payments will receive their £150 after their first Council Tax direct debit payment has been completed. We are working hard to make payments to the very few who pay by direct debit and who have not yet been paid.

If a customer has not yet received their Council Tax Rebate, there is no need to contact the Council. Those households who pay their Council Tax by direct debit and have paid their first Council Tax payment but have not yet received their Council Tax Rebate will be receiving a letter from the Council explaining what steps to take to obtain the £150.

By the end of May, we will write to the approximately 18,500 households who we believe are eligible for the Council Tax Rebate and who don’t pay their Council Tax by direct debit to arrange how we will make the £150 payment. These payments will start by the end of June. These households will receive a letter giving options to either provide bank account details to receive payment or have a credit made to their council tax account.

Councillor Bryony Rudkin, Deputy Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, says:

“I am pleased that we are making good progress in paying the Council Tax Rebate. We will continue to work hard to ensure that those who haven’t yet received it do get it well before the Government’s deadline for councils to pay everyone eligible by 30 September 2022.”

Customers should be wary of potential scams and not give out personal information (particularly their bank details) in response to text messages, emails, phone calls or social media posts claiming to be about this payment. Any contact about the Council Tax Rebate will be sent in a letter from Ipswich Borough Council and will provide a secure, safe way for households to upload their bank details. If you have any doubt about the authenticity of the letter,  you can use the Council’s website to access the secure portal.
