Ipswich celebrates a special Regent birthday

Published7th April 2016

Twenty-five years ago the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra provided the opening performance at the Regent Theatre, which was re-opened as East Anglia’s biggest theatre under the ownership of the Borough Council.

Now, a quarter of a century later, they are coming back … celebrating with town and county at a special gala concert featuring the music of John Williams.

Paul Bateman will take the baton for the performance on Wednesday 21st September at 7.30pm so make sure you don’t miss out on this special part of Regent - and Ipswich - history.

The Royal Philharmonic will be celebrating the musical brilliance of John Williams, undoubtedly one of the world's most prolific and respected film composers. As the most Oscar-nominated man alive, John Williams unleashed the power of the film score in more than 75 blockbusters, creating one of the greatest film composer/director collaborations ever with the great Steven Spielberg.

The RPO will perform a handful of these superb orchestrations and legendary melodies, including music from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T., Harry Potter, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Hook, Fiddler on the Roof, Home Alone, War Horse and many more.

From the bleak and haunting Main Theme from Schindler’s List to the twinkling and mischievous opening to Harry Potter, this concert is full of the magic of the movies that you know and love. Packed with action, adventure and a galaxy far, far away, this is your chance to hear the remarkable music of John Williams performed live in Ipswich.

The RPO said: “The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to be returning to the Ipswich Regent Theatre this autumn with a John Williams Gala Concert, 25 years after the Ipswich Regent was reopened by the council and the Royal Philharmonic (Pops Orchestra) closed the opening concert with John Williams’ Star Wars. We hope to see old and new faces at what promises to be an out-of-this-world concert.”

Mark Whiting, the Council’s Commercial Development Operations Manager, said: “This is going to be another great moment in the ongoing history of the Regent. For a theatre that always attracts the biggest names it is only right that we have the best to celebrate our 25thanniversary.”

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is back at the Regent on Friday 2nd December with a Christmas Cracker concert, an evening of yuletide magic which is ideal for all ages. Traditional music will be combined with classic sing-a-long carols to leave you with a warm fireside glow.

Tickets are on sale from Friday 8th April: www.ipswichregent.com or in person from the Ipswich Tourist Information Centre in St Stephen’s Church.
