Ipswich pays respects to Paris

Ipswich stood in silence at 11am today to remember the victims of the Paris atrocities.

Deputy Mayor Bill Quinton led a moving ceremony on the Town Hall steps as he told dozens of passers by who stood in silence: “We are here to remember those people who died or were injured  in the Paris attacks on Friday night.”

Shoppers joined Councillors and visitors in the short silence before a small group started singing the Marseillaise, the French national anthem.

A French flag has been lowered to half mast and was fluttering in the wind above the crowd on the Cornhill.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Ipswich, Glen Chisholm, has written to Frederick Leturque, the Mayor of Arras, the northern French town which has close links with Ipswich. He said: "I write on behalf of all your friends in Ipswich to express our condolences over the appalling atrocities in Paris on Friday evening, and to share your suffering over the deaths of so many innocent people. Our deep sympathy is with the French nation at this difficult time.”
