Ipswich celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style over 4-day Bank Holiday weekend (2 to 5 June 2022)

Published8th March 2022

Ipswich Borough Council are looking forward to the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the reign of the monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Ipswich will be able to celebrate at three Council organised events and residents will also be helped to organise their own Jubilee parties.

The three events are:

  • Thursday 2 June: There will be a Beacon Lighting Event on the lawn at Christchurch Mansion as part of a national network of over 1,500 beacons being lit across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories. Entertainment and food will be provided with themes from across the Commonwealth and there will be a firework display.
  • Saturday 4 June: There will be a Platinum Party on the Cornhill in conjunction with a special live concert from Buckingham Palace that will bring together some of the world’s biggest entertainment stars. There will be a large screen on the Cornhill to show the concert live. Seating for the public will be provided as well as Commonwealth-themed food and refreshment. Jubilee-themed decoration and lighting will also be installed.
  • Sunday 5 June: There will be The Big Jubilee Lunch street party event on the Cornhill for the public to attend, with street party décor and food, again incorporating a Commonwealth-theme, provided. The large screen from the evening before will remain in place and will provide a montage of images from across the Queen’s reign with a focus on Her Majesty’s visits to Ipswich and will also show The Platinum Jubilee Pageant live from London as a backdrop to the event, finishing with the showing of the highlights from the concert the night before.

But it’s not just what the Council is organising, we can help you organise your own event, too. Many Ipswich residents may wish to organise and create their own celebrations and hold their own Big Jubilee Lunch Street Parties. Ipswich Borough Council will be producing an online information pack that will help the public hold small community events, give national guidance and link to schemes and to the simplified process for road closures. The pack will be publicised shortly and will also be available at www.ipswichentertains.co.uk

Cllr Sarah Barber, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Town Centre, says:

“I am pleased the Council are announcing three events in Ipswich for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations over the 4-day Bank Holiday Weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.

“Yet it’s not just our events and national events that we are supporting. If you want to organise your own Big Jubilee Lunch Street Party, we will be helping you by providing information and more.”
