Work to upgrade Newbury Road play area set to begin

Published3rd July 2023

Improvements to the children’s play area at Newbury Road Recreation Ground will start this week, Monday 3 July.

The play area is the fourth to be renewed as part of Ipswich Borough Council’s Play Area Strategy 2022-2027 which is set to invest £3.5million in the Borough’s play spaces.

New equipment being added to the play area includes a scramble and slide, accessible swing and a sky swing with pod seats.

Equipment suitable for use by older children is also being installed. A challenging climbing frame will give children the chance to scramble up a large traversing wall with climbing poles, a net, vertical drag rope, arched pole rail and post-mounted footholds. A new fitness area is also being created for park users.

Part of the existing play area (recently installed swings and springies) will remain in use while work takes place, with completion due later this summer.

Councillor Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, says:

“We’re steadily working to make improvements to play areas right across the town.

Although the works to Newbury Road play area will fall during the summer holidays, we are working to ensure this is completed by the end of summer.

We’d like to thank the public for providing feedback on the play areas we have improved so far. We’re pleased to include a new fitness space within the recreation ground to help people of all ages stay fit for free.”
