A community project looking at how Ipswich responded to the end of the First World War wants local people to supply stories, photographs and medals.
“Ipswich and the Armistice: unlocking the hidden history of the town” has been created by Ipswich Museums and funded by National Lottery players through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Not only will it explore how people felt then; it will also discover how they feel now 100 years on.
As with many towns at the end of the First World War, the people of Ipswich and the surrounding area wanted to reflect on, remember and commemorate the struggle of the previous four years. More than 10,000 men from Ipswich took part in the conflict – 1,481 died and many more were injured.
This artist-led community project aims to uncover hidden family stories about the end of the war and Ipswich Museums needs the community’s help to make it a success. If you have family stories or stories behind photographs, letters, diaries or medals relating to Ipswich and the end of the First World War please email museums@ipswich.gov.uk by 31st July.
