Ipswich schools join in the fun of Recycle Week

Published20th October 2023

Ipswich Borough Council has teamed up with the Ipswich Town Foundation on visits to local primary schools this week to raise awareness of Recycle Week 2023.

This year’s Recycle Week theme encourages everyone to think about ‘often missed’ items that can be recycled, but are commonly not placed blue bins at home.

Children from St Margaret's CEVA Primary School and Gusford Primary School received a visit from Ipswich Borough Council’s waste services team on 18 October.  This visit was aimed at helping children to learn about the importance of recycling, how we can all reduce our waste and highlight often missed items which can be recycled – such as empty aerosols, food tins, plastic cleaning bottles and toiletry bottles, or plastic pots, tubs, and trays.

The Ipswich Town Foundation also worked with children to help them learn what changes the football club has made to be more sustainable as well as encouraging them to think about how football related items can be recycled or reused.

Councillor Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, says:

“It’s been brilliant working with local schools to help children learn about the importance of recycling.

Our team found the children to be very enthusiastic about sustainability and we hope they’ll be able to take their learnings home to their families so that everyone can feel more confident in their recycling.

We’d like to thank Ipswich Town Foundation for supporting us this week.”

“It’s been fantastic working with the Ipswich Borough Council team and local schools to get kids learning about recycling,” added Max Wilkes-Barker, Environmental Sustainability Officer at Ipswich Town Foundation.

“I think we were all really impressed by how knowledgeable the kids were and how excited they were about what we had to deliver.

It’s fantastic to get out there in the community and see the impact our work has first-hand.”

Ipswich Borough Council works with partners to provide schools with a fun and interactive educational recycling programme and offers these services for free. The Council has a range of sessions that can be delivered, linking with the curriculum on recycling, waste prevention, litter, and sustainability.
