Increase in visitors to Ipswich town centre for Weekender events

Published15th March 2023

The first Ipswich Weekender of 2023 (10-12 March) saw visitors flock to Ipswich town centre with a 27% increase in footfall compared to last weekend – when Ipswich Town were playing at home.

600 people experienced the climbing wall and 500 tried caving on the Cornhill as free events held on Saturday and Sunday.

Thankfully the sun shone to ensure that outdoor activities could be fully enjoyed by Ipswich residents, including music under Lloyds Avenue and a stunning fire display on Saturday evening.

Sixteen different Ipswich Weekender events took place in total, including a popup shop at the historic Ancient House which saw 2,100 visitors and a Love your Library book give away with 500 books distributed from Ipswich Town Hall.

Councillor David Ellesmere, Ipswich Borough Council Leader, says:

“Footfall figures show there were many more people in Ipswich town centre this weekend compared to the previous one, despite Town playing away.

“This shows that events can and will encourage people to enjoy the town centre. We look forward to planning more Weekenders, as well as smaller events, later this year.

“Our next big Weekender will be at the start of July based around the ever-popular Ipswich Music Day on 2 July.”
