Ipswich Borough Council is celebrating the success of its eight microhomes, dedicated to helping rough sleepers in Ipswich.
Since the first tenant moved into Armitage Place in July 2021, the microhomes have helped 16 people in the last two years with temporary housing and access to further support.
Currently seven of the eight homes are occupied, with nine other people having lived there, engaged with support and then moved on.
The facility provides a temporary home for those needing support for up to two years, before moving on to other long-term accommodation, allowing others to then receive temporary support.
The homes were named after Simon Armitage, Poet Laureate who donated books to residents when the microhomes were first opened in 2019.
Councillor Alasdair Ross, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Housing, says:
“We are extremely proud of the help Armitage Place has enabled us to achieve in the last two years. These units are doing what they set out to do, offering a basic home for those in most need, allowing individuals time and support to stabilise their lives before moving into other accommodation.
I’m proud of our homelessness support in Ipswich working with local partners. It’s a tough economic time with the cost of living, but our Housing Options team work extremely hard to provide the support needed to prevent homelessness and help those in need on our streets.”
