We currently have a range of apprenticeship vacancies available across a wide range of services.

An apprenticeship with us is a great stepping-stone to your career, giving you valuable work experience, a recognised qualification, access to all our employee benefits and your own income. 

On top of this, as an apprentice you will take part in the Council’s Apprentice Development Programme, aimed at helping you develop a range of transferable skills including time management, problem solving and decision making. Many of our apprentices go on to get jobs with the Council after their apprenticeship.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the interview process will be carried out via Skype for Business or Microsoft Teams.

Ipswich Borough Council’s Waste and Cleansing team ensures the tidiness and cleanliness of the town centre and surrounding areas. They are responsible for waste collections, street cleaning, graffiti removal and recycling education.

Main duties:

  1. Provide prompt and specific advice to enquiries including existing, general customer & resident enquiries either by phone, email, or face to face.
  2. Assist in processing customer requests for new or additional services. Assist in producing and administering customer documentation adhering to legal compliance and pursue nonreturn of documentation.
  3. To carry out the general administration associated with the service including maintaining the relevant databases and producing reports. Raising purchase orders; taking telephone payments and organising specialist collections.
  4. Support the effective day to day smooth running of the service and maintain the highest levels of customer care when liaising directly between customers and operational staff

Ipswich Borough Council is looking to appoint an apprentice to join our team.

Main duties: 

  1. To undertake tasks that, fulfil the Apprenticeship Units and gain a portfolio of evidence towards accreditation.
  2. Assist with the delivery of the Grounds Maintenance service based at one of the councils three hub areas Christchurch, Holywells and ChantryPark.
  3. Develop a working knowledge of Health & Safely and the operational practices within the broader workplace
  4. Gardening and land management duties 
  5. Such variations as may be required from time to time without changing the general charter of the duties shown above or the level of responsibility entailed.

Do you enjoy maths, science and technology? Building Services Engineering involves working to design and maintain systems such as renewable and emerging technologies, energy management, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, drainage, lighting, power, water services, building management systems, fire and alarm systems and lifts. 

Main duties:

  1. Work alongside the Engineers to help head project teams for engineering projects and contracts, including selecting, organising and managing the team of consultants and contractors and co-ordinating their programme activities, assist the AOM (R & M) in the delivery of the department’s Service Improvement plan.
  2. Being mentored by the Engineers, aid with technical feasibility studies, provide budgetary estimates, specification and contract documentation for the adaptation, refurbishment, repair, and maintenance of corporate property portfolio (using where required technical engineering equipment).
  3. Assist the Engineers with Obtaining the necessary statutory approvals for approved projects such as Planning, Building Regulations, Health & Safety Executive etc.
  4. Research information and prepare documents for financial analysis, development of specification of sustainable products and development of partnership approach with suppliers, aiming to improve the overall service provided.

Maintenance and Contracts are responsible for maintaining the Council’s Housing stock and delivering front line services for repairs, maintenance and adaptations.

Assist with a range of business support tasks:

  • Opening, scanning, and distributing mail, answer telephone calls and deal with minor queries as appropriate, processing of purchase orders and related invoices, maintain records and prepare statistical reports, taking notes and minutes at meetings, assist with complaints  
  • Updating documentation and ICT systems, project support tasks as required by the team whilst working to deadlines
  • Maintaining training records and assisting with the maintenance of departmental procedure/process manuals
  • Assist in the provision of statistical information for performance and management information reports
  • Managing diaries to ensure all work is correctly allocated to Craft Operatives
